The Volkswagen Transporter has somewhat of a cult following thanks to the iconic camper and subsequent Transporter conversions. While it makes a fantastic home away from home, it’s equally as capable in the mid-size commercial vehicle sector.

The Transporter base lends itself to many different models, from the Volkswagen Transporter Kombi double cab, the Caravelle MPV, Shuttle minibuses and the ever popular California Camper. The latest T6 was introduced in 2015 and won Van of the Year at the Auto Express New Van Awards in 2016.

While the T6 styling looks very similar to the last Transporter – in terms of design the van is a bit like the Volkswagen Golf, so generations are very evolutionary – it is significantly upgraded under the bonnet. A range of Euro 6 diesel engines are clean and highly efficient, and you can specify a DSG twin-clutch automated gearbox on higher output models, along with the option of 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

Things are also pretty much unchanged at the rear, the van is still offered with two wheelbases, three roof heights and two seating combinations all to ensure that you can tailor the van perfectly to your needs. There’s also an incredible range of standard safety equipment in the latest Volkswagen Transporter. This includes the usual ESP and ABS braking, plus Automatic Post-Collision Braking, that aims to prevent a secondary collision after an accident.

Inside Volkswagen Transporter vans, the cabin is a lovely place to sit. Comfortable seats prove no problem even on long journeys, DAB and Bluetooth come as standard as does a 5-inch touch screen display. Opt for the range-topping Highline and you receive an auto-dimming rear view mirror, auto lights and wipers, climate control, a heated windscreen and leather covering for the steering wheel too. This all adds to the usability of the van, it’s a vehicle that you could live with day in day out without complaint.
