Understanding the A3 EV Grant Scheme
In a world where addressing climate change is becoming increasingly urgent, the government and many local councils are introducing new initiatives to transition towards a more sustainable future.
The Electric Towns and Cities Initiative (ETCI) in Guildford is a National Highways project worth £11 million. The ETCI consists of 3 elements: the A3 Electric Vehicle grant scheme, a rapid charging network, and an active travel programme. This article will focus on the A3 Electric Vehicle grant scheme, uncovering what it is, who’s eligible and how you can apply for it.
What is the A3 Grant?
The A3 EV grant scheme and similar initiatives are a response to the urgent need to mitigate climate change and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. By incentivising the adoption of electric vehicles, the scheme aims to lower carbon emissions, improve air quality, and promote sustainable transportation solutions.
The scheme offers grants of £5,000-£10,000 for businesses and charities who switch their diesel van to fully electric. The scheme is aimed at those living or working in and around Guildford, regularly travelling along the A3.

How does it work?
Once your application for the A3 EV grant is accepted, you will be emailed a voucher which you can then redeem at your chosen accredited dealer. The ETCI Guildford team aims to send vouchers out within 10 days of your completed application, although this can sometimes be longer depending on the volume of applications.
Are you eligible?
There are two criteria you need to meet to be eligible for the grant:
Firstly, you need to make at least 150 journeys a year on the section of the A3 between A31 to Farnham junction and Woodbridge Hill junction to A25 and A322 (you will need to be able to evidence this with telematics, invoice or contacts for example).
You must purchase your new fully electric van through an ETCI accredited dealer. Auto Capital are proud to be an ETCI accredited dealer, meaning any new EV you purchase from us will be eligible for the grant, assuming you fulfil all other criteria.
How to apply
Applying for the A3 EV Grant Scheme is a straightforward process. Simply visit the Surrey County Council website and fill in the A3 Electric Vehicle Grant application form. As part of the application process you will be asked to upload information related to your business, including:
Registration, V5 (including VIN number) and annual mileage of your existing diesel vehicle
Make and model of your new electric vehicle
Evidence of your journeys on the A3 (telematics, invoices, contracts etc)
Full accounts for the last 2 years
Company/charity registration number if applicable
