ULEZ update
London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone was introduced on 9th April of this year. A plan to minimise emissions in the capital by deterring vehicles with high emissions from passing through with a daily charge of £12.50 - on top of the congestion charge. Here’s an update on what we know about ULEZ and how you can avoid the charges.
The first thing to know about ULEZ is that it operated from midnight to midnight, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Unlike the congestion charge, there is no getting away from this if your vehicle is over the emissions standard.
What is the emissions standard?

It is worth noting that a van is classed as under 3.5 tonnes. If your vehicle exceeds this, it will fall into the ‘lorries and coaches’ category.
Travelling overnight
If you’re travelling late at night into the small hours of the morning, you will have to pay two days’ worth of charges. The charge runs from midnight to midnight so the moment the clock strikes twelve, if you’re in the zone, your charge will run over into the next day.
Vehicles registered outside of the UK
If you’re driving a van that is registered in another country, the charge will still apply if the vehicle does not meet the emissions standards.
Exemptions
The only people eligible for a discount or exemption on ULEZ are those who are already registered for the residents’ congestion charge discount. If this applies to you, you’ll receive a 100% discount on ULEZ until 24th October 2021 which is deemed as enough time to find a suitable, alternative vehicle to meet the standards. During this grace period, residents will still have to pay the otherwise extinct T-Charge with a discounted rate of 90%.
